Connor McDavid 2015 Young Gun RC What are the most valuable Connor McDavid hockey cards? This is a question I get often from hockey card collectors. I always say go after his rookie cards, they will be the most valuable. Most collectors want rookie cards to invest in. There is no NHL player on the planet right now better than Connor McDavid, so why not collect his cards. Hockey card collecting can get expensive if you are not sure which cards to go after. In this article I will give you tips and guide you in the right direction on what most valuable Connor McDavid hockey cards to purchase.
Connor McDavid was drafted first overall in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft. The Edmonton Oilers won the lottery and the right to select the most dangerous player in the CHL. A few months later Upper Deck released the first licensed NHL Connor McDavid hockey cards. His Young Gun from Upper Deck series 1 was all the rage. Prices soared almost immediately as new hockey card collectors entered the hobby in hopes of profiting off the young star.
Young Gun hockey cards are well known in the hobby to be the official rookie card of a player. The first price I saw had a $150 price tag. A month later the card soared to $250 and they were still highly sought after. These prices were for ungraded raw cards. A graded BGS 10 Gem Mint will run you a cool $850+ in today’s market. If you were lucky enough to get the exclusive version, which only 100 were made, the asking price today is upwards of $13K for a graded copy.
Now here is a shocker for you. Connor McDavid’s young gun was over produced. I am not sure of exact numbers but 40K copies wouldn’t surprise me in the least. Upper Deck saw an opportunity and cashed in on it, and who can blame them. It was literally a license to print money. The supply met the demand and therefore prices remained steady. Future growth of this young gun will be minimal at best. I would advise against collecting McDavid young gun hockey cards. It is too late to make money on them so I would consider it a bad investment.
What is the most valuable Connor McDavid hockey card?
Connor McDavid 2015 The Cup RPA Now that I have mentioned a card to avoid, the question is what are the most valuable Connor McDavid hockey cards. Should you invest your hard earned money in it? Sure why not? If you have the cash available why not pick up his 2015 Upper Deck The Cup RPA. This is a serial numbered card and only 99 were made. It features a patch from his jersey and an autograph of the star. Rookie patch autograph hockey cards are highly sought after by collectors and this is one of the most valuable Connor McDavid hockey cards that you should have in your collection.
The first thing I notice about the McDavid RPA is his autograph is different from his in person auto’s. I obtained a few in person auto’s in the preseason in 2015-16 season and as you can see the signature has changed once he started signing multiple autographs for UD. If you have this rendition of his autograph they should be worth more in the future. Hang on to them.
In June of 2020 the McDavid 2015 The Cup RPA sold for a record $135K+, shattering the modern day record for highest priced hockey card. A BGS 10 of the same card earlier sold for $55K+ but obviously wasn’t numbered 97/99 like the latest one. Every card I have seen sold has a premium if the players number is part of the serial number.
In conclusion you can expect to pay $17K+ for a PSA 9 of the McDavid 2015 The Cup RPA.
2015 UD Premier Connor McDavid. During my search for the most valuable Connor McDavid hockey cards, I searched the PSA registry and found that this card has never been graded in PSA 9 or 10 and only one exists as a PSA 8. There are three copies graded as a PSA 7. Either there are still a lot of this card in unopened boxes or they are just hard to find in pristine condition. Being an acetate card there could be surface issues. Unlike The Cup RPA version there are 199 copies of the Premier version.
I searched the eBay sold for listings and found the most recent one sold on July 23rd for $2500. There was another sold on July 19th for $1800. Prices definitely vary substantially for this highly sought after rookie card. Hockey card collectors should definitely pursue this rookie card. If you keep your eyes open on eBay you may get lucky and find a deal, certainly worth a try.
In conclusion the 2015-16 Premier RPA of the Connor McDavid hockey card will hold its value and should see increases being limited to just 199 copies. It is a great consolation prize if you can’t afford to collect the Cup version.
2015 SP Authentic Connor McDavid FWAP. There were only 100 copies of this card produced, making it one of the most valuable Connor McDavid hockey cards. PSA has graded 12 copies of which only two came in with a score of 9. The other ten were graded 8, meaning there are no PSA 10’s in existence at the time of this writing. A card graded 8 will cost you $1500 of your hard earned cash, while a 9 will run you approximately $3000.
This card is out of range for most rookie card collectors but, it is one you should have in your rookie card collection. With only 100 out there in the wild it may be tough to obtain at a decent price. It will increase in value over time so it is still a wise investment. It isn’t his true rookie card though, so you may want to skip by it and sink your money into the next card on the most valuable Connor McDavid hockey cards list.
2015 SP Game Used Connor McDavid The 2015-16 SP Game Used is Connor McDavid’s rarest rookie card produced. If you were lucky enough to fall into the 97/97, congratulations on a rare find. The 97/97 is considered a 1/1 by most hockey card collectors. The card would have a huge premium on it. I personally purchased a couple cases of this product when it launched but wasn’t lucky enough to find one. I have purchased boxes of 2015-16 SP Game Used whenever I can afford it. Still no luck to this day. I highly recommend chasing this card, whether you buy it as a single straight up or join group breaks in the hope of pulling one.
A box of this product will run you $260-$300 CAD. The 2015-16 SP game Used McDavid last sold for $600, 33 days ago. Very affordable for an actual true rookie card. The Autographed Blue Parallel sold for $1500 when I last checked. Those prices were for ungraded raw cards. I would imagine a graded copy would sell for approximately $1K. Still a great deal. You will notice this card does not have a patch or a piece of his jersey or an autograph. Not a lot of eye candy with this rookie card of McDavid but, still highly sought after because of the low serial number and it being a true rookie card.
